Harmonize.
Last night, I overcame a pretty big fear - singing, in public! I even used a microphone and everything. It was super fun. That’s all.

Newness.
It’s been awhile, Tumblr. And it’s not for lack of trying, either. Over the past couple months, I have probably started a half-dozen entries and scrapped them. You see, I have this sort of inability to express myself the way I want to. So, I usually just mask that inability with sarcasm. And I think that gives people the wrong impression. I am not some overly negative person or...

Credo.
I overheard a tearful conversation between a couple friends at the funeral. It’s something that I won’t forget anytime soon. “It takes everything you have to love someone. It takes everything.” “Yeah, it does, but it’s so worth it in the end.” Man. I believe in freedom The redemption of the needy The curing of diseases The hope of a new sunrise The rise...

So sad. →
I am horrible at dealing with death. It’s hard to wrap your mind around not seeing someone again. This girl was in my youth group. She was really shy and had curly hair. Man, she was only 15 years old. What an awful situation for her family. It’s times like these that I just pray for comfort for those involved.

Sick.
Being sick always makes me forget what it feels like when I am well. Right now, I would like to be well! I have been coughing and sneezing for a few days. And my throat feels like I swallowed a razor blade. But that’s okay - Thanksgiving is this week. Over the last ten years or so, Thanksgiving has transformed into my favorite holiday. It’s a simple day of family and friends and food...

Food.
I want to learn how to cook. Is there, like, essential information that you need to know? What are the basics? ‘Cause I have taught myself how to do a lot, but it seems like there is always a starting point. Like, with guitar there are basic chords to start with.  So, what is the starting point? Any self-taught cooks want to give me some pointers? It is not like I am completely clueless....

Change.
One of the things we’ve talked about at Exodus is change. Someone asked the question, “If you could change anything about your life, what would it be?”, which seems like a pretty basic question. But I’ve really been thinking about it a lot lately. Not necessarily about the question as asked, though. If I were to change anything about my life, and it was an immediate change, does that really...

Etcetera.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks. Chicago was great. It was so nice to spend time with some friends I only see a couple times a year. My youngest brother, Joe, had his graduation party this past weekend. Weird! It’s always strange to run into friends and family that you see exclusively at graduation parties, weddings, and funerals. Sometimes, I wish it wasn’t like that. In...

Fireworks.
I really do not understand the fascination that people have with fireworks. I mean, I guess they look cool. But they are so frivolous and silly. And, to make matters worse, Americans spent $945 million on fireworks in 2009. Yikes! Aren’t we in the biggest recession in decades? A friend of mine has a big Fourth of July party every year. Of course, there are fireworks. This year, I drove with...

Toronto.
A couple of weeks ago I went to Toronto. I kind of like it there a lot. Growing up in Michigan, a state with no real major cities (Detroit does not count), it is nice to be somewhere with lots of people. The midwest, suburban life I am accustomed to does not fulfill my desire to be surrounded by people. Most of my time in Toronto was spent walking around, with a backpack and a map, and observing...

Run.
After a year off, I’ve started running again. It was really difficult at first. But it only gets easier each time out. The other night, I went for a run and I just felt really alive. It was dark out and I didn’t see anyone the entire time I was running. I felt focused and it was nice to push myself and keep going even when I wanted to quit. In the late summer/early fall, I am going...

Thirty.
Tomorrow, starting at 7AM, I will be participating in 30 Hour Famine. It’s a social justice event that serves to raise awareness and money towards world hunger. I will be doing this with the youth group at my church. It’s pretty cool to see some of the kids really put their all into this. In order to participate, everyone had to raise at least $30 in donations. One guy in the youth...

Buddy.
About two months ago, my cat, Buddy, went missing for over two weeks. When he first returned home, he was really thin and pretty sick. It took him a little while to get back to “normal”. But he has never really gotten back to normal. Before, Buddy wasn’t the most affectionate cat in the world. He kept to himself an awful lot. Now, he is always looking for people to pet him,...

Outside.
I have a nice sunburn on my face. There is even an outline of lighter skin where my hair hangs over my forehead. The best part about a sunburn is that you can not get one unless you are outside.

Work.
“We have become, after several thousand years of effort, in the industrialized world at least, the only animals to have wrested ourselves from an anxious search for the source of the next meal and therefore to have opened up new stretches of time - in which we can learn Swedish, master calculus, and worry about the authenticity of our relationships…Yet our world of abundance, with seas...

Stuff.
I was having dinner with my friend, Eric, the other day and I mentioned to him that I wanted to write a few things. He said I should do it. So, I am doing it. Lately, I have been evaluating a lot of things about my life. One thing that has been bothering me is that I feel like I am being crushed by the weight of my possessions. It’s pretty opressive, in all honesty. I own a lot of stuff. I...

Surprise(d).
It takes a lot to catch me off-guard. With that being said, I was absolutely floored this past weekend. In the best way possible, too. My mind was set on not seeing Yuan until the end of August, because that’s when she comes back. And I was passing the time pretty efficiently, I think. But, with some careful planning, she was able to surprise me with a visit. Totally unexpected, and totally...

Documentaries.
Man, I just watched Chasing Ghosts and it was so good. I really like documentaries because I like seeing real people, sometimes. I like hearing their stories and seeing their struggles, even if they are just a bunch of strange dudes that played arcade games in the 80s. Sometime this week I am going to watch Word Wars, which is described as, “Tiles and tribulations on the Scrabble...

Vancouver.
Well, in a sense, I am back in the waiting room. I was in Vancouver last weekend. I was visiting my girlfriend, as she is in Vancouver until the end of August. And, let me tell you, it’s hard being seperated from her. So, spending a weekend together was pretty much the best thing ever. There is no defining moment of the weekend. Every moment is memorable for so many different reasons. You...
